Fragrance-Free vs Unscented Skincare: What’s the Difference?

A moisturiser can smell like absolutely nothing and still contain fragrance. Annoying? A little. Useful to know when you’re choosing skincare? Very.

If you’re looking for a fragrance-free face serum or moisturiser, the words on the front of the packaging matter—but they don’t all mean the same thing.

Does unscented mean fragrance-free?

No. An unscented product has no noticeable smell, but it may contain an ingredient added to mask the scent of the formula. Fragrance-free generally means fragrance and masking scents have not been added.

That distinction matters if fragrance tends to bother your skin. It’s also why checking the ingredient list is more useful than giving a product a quick sniff. A formula’s natural ingredients can have a faint smell of their own; fragrance-free does not necessarily mean odour-free.

Is fragrance-free skincare better for sensitive skin?

Choosing fragrance-free skincare removes one potential source of irritation. It does not guarantee that every formula will suit every face. Skin can react to other ingredients too, so introduce a new product one at a time and pay attention to how your skin feels.

You also don’t need a complicated “sensitive skin routine” to make a sensible choice. Start with a gentle cleanser and a moisturiser you like using. Add a serum if you want a lighter layer of hydration. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.

Where does HOUBY fit?

HOUBY’s Tremella + Ferment Hydration Serum is a lightweight, fragrance-free layer with Tremella extract, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate and panthenol. Follow it with the Reishi + Ceramide Barrier Cream when you want a richer moisturiser with squalane, shea butter and ceramides. Both can be used morning or evening; sunscreen remains the final step in the morning.

The short version: look for fragrance-free, read the ingredient list, and choose textures you’ll actually enjoy using. Your routine doesn’t need a scent to feel like a ritual.
