Every few years, a new ingredient gets the treatment: breathless press releases, a TikTok wave, an influencer holding a bottle in soft light. Mushroom skincare is firmly in that cycle now. Most of it is noise. Reishi is not.

Ganoderma lucidum — Reishi, if you prefer — has been used in traditional East Asian medicine for over two thousand years. Not trending. Not recently "discovered." It was described in Chinese medical texts centuries before modern cosmeceutical science got around to explaining why it works. The good news is that science has now largely caught up, and the findings are specific enough to be interesting.

The Compound Situation

Reishi is not a single-active ingredient. It contains polysaccharides (including beta-glucans), triterpenes, phenolic compounds, and sterols — each operating through a different mechanism. This matters because it means Reishi isn't doing one thing in your skin; it's doing several, and they interact. The skincare industry tends to prefer simpler stories, which may be why Reishi hasn't been as loudly marketed as, say, hyaluronic acid. The complexity is actually the point.

What Triterpenes Do to Inflammation

If your skin runs hot — reactive, prone to redness, quick to flare up at perceived insults — triterpenes are the compound to understand. Research published in peer-reviewed literature has consistently shown that Ganoderma lucidum triterpenes suppress pro-inflammatory signalling molecules including TNF-α and IL-6, primarily by inhibiting the NF-κB pathway. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in PubMed, drawing on studies from the past two decades, confirmed significant anti-inflammatory effects across multiple models.

For skin, this translates to a reduced inflammatory response in conditions like rosacea, sensitivity, and the cortisol-driven breakout cycle that tends to arrive alongside a bad week at work. Reishi is classified as an adaptogen, which sounds vague but has a more precise meaning here: it helps regulate how the body responds to physical and emotional stress, rather than simply suppressing a single pathway. The skin-stress connection is real and underresearched in consumer skincare; Reishi addresses it from both sides.

Oxidative Stress and the Collagen Question

Oxidative stress — driven by UV radiation, pollution, and general modern living — is one of the primary mechanisms of skin aging. It generates free radicals that damage skin cells, degrade collagen, and accumulate over time in ways that eventually become visible.

Reishi's phenolic compounds and triterpenes demonstrate strong free-radical scavenging activity, and research indicates that Ganoderma lucidum extract can inhibit enzymes involved in collagen degradation. A study published in ScienceDirect found that the extract reduced both DNA damage-induced and UVA-induced skin aging markers. This is not the same as reversing aging, which nothing reliably does — but it does make Reishi a useful daily defence against the low-grade oxidative insult most skin is absorbing without anyone noticing.

The Pigmentation Angle

This one is less commonly mentioned, possibly because "skin brightening" has accumulated enough cultural baggage to make brands nervous. But the mechanism is legitimate and worth explaining plainly.

Tyrosinase is the enzyme that drives melanin production — the same process that creates post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and uneven tone. Ganoderma lucidum extract has been shown to inhibit tyrosinase activity, with one PubMed study recording an IC50 value of 0.32 mg/mL — the strongest among the Basidiomycetes tested, which included Cordyceps and Agaricus. A compound isolated from Reishi called ganodermanondiol has been identified as a specific mediator of this effect. It does not bleach skin. It interferes with the enzyme that produces excess melanin, which is a meaningfully different thing.

Where Beta-Glucans Come In

Reishi is also a source of beta-glucans — the polysaccharides that underpin much of functional mushroom skincare's barrier and hydration story. In Reishi, the glucan fraction can represent nearly half the carbohydrate content of an extract. Beta-glucans support skin barrier function, help regulate the skin's immune response, and retain moisture at the surface. If Reishi's triterpenes are handling inflammation and oxidative stress deeper in the tissue, the beta-glucans are holding things together at the barrier level. Two different layers of the same skin. Not redundant — complementary.

What This Means in Practice

Reishi is not a spot treatment or a single-problem fix. It is, at this point in the research, an ingredient with documented activity across inflammation, oxidative defence, barrier support, and pigmentation — working through multiple pathways simultaneously. That complexity is unusual in skincare. Most ingredients are one thing well. Reishi is several things at once, and the evidence is specific enough to take seriously.
