Two Different Problems, One Confused Bathroom Cabinet
Somewhere in your bathroom is a serum bought to fix "dryness" that never actually fixed anything. This isn't a formula problem. It's a diagnosis problem. Dry skin and dehydrated skin are treated like synonyms in most skincare marketing, and they're not even the same category of issue — one is a skin type, the other is a temporary state, and giving one the treatment meant for the other is why so many routines quietly fail.
Dry skin means your skin doesn't produce enough of its own oil. It's structural, often long-term, and needs lipids — the fats and oils that hold the barrier together. Dehydrated skin means there isn't enough water in the outer layer of your skin, and it can happen to anyone, including people with naturally oily skin. It shows up as tightness, dullness, fine lines that look more obvious than usual, a general sense that something's off even though nothing's technically "dry." Reach for a rich, oil-heavy cream when what you actually need is water, and you end up with skin that feels coated but still isn't hydrated underneath.
Why "Just Drink More Water" Isn't the Whole Answer
The advice to drink more water isn't wrong, exactly. It's just incomplete. Hydration in skin is less about how much water passes through you and more about how much water your skin's outer layer can hold onto, and how fast it loses it. That second part — water loss — is measured by dermatologists as transepidermal water loss, or TEWL: water evaporating straight through the skin's surface into the air. Central heating, aircon, wind, low humidity, hot showers, over-cleansing — all of it speeds up TEWL. You can drink three litres a day and still lose the water faster than you take it in.
This is where humectants earn their keep. A humectant pulls water in and holds it at the skin's surface instead of letting it evaporate off. Beta-glucan, one of Houby's core actives, does exactly this — and does something most humectants don't: it also forms a thin film across the skin that physically slows water loss, rather than just attracting more water in. A humidity-controlled office in summer and a cold snap in winter are not the same skin environment, and your skin barrier is not required to have the same needs in July as it does in January. If a product only ever addresses one half of that equation, it's only ever solving half your problem.
Beta-glucan works on the water side of the equation, which is the half most routines skip in favour of another rich cream. It's not a miracle ingredient. It's a well-studied polysaccharide doing a specific, unglamorous job — and unglamorous is usually a good sign that something is actually working, rather than performing.
